With the EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon has further refined its semi-professional full frame all-rounder. With a solid build and improved weather sealing, faster burst speed, increased resolution, increased dynamic range, updated autofocus system and Dual Pixel live view functionality, the Mark IV will be as much camera as many people need, even if it doesn’t revolutionize the 5D-line the way its predecessors have.

The Canon 5D Mark IV offers a ton of new features and performance upgrades, but keeps things modest and familiar with its similar yet refined design. The fourth iteration of Canon’s popular 5D series gains a new, higher-res sensor, a faster processor, a full touchscreen interface, built-in wireless connectivity and Cinema 4K video recording. Aimed at professionals and advanced enthusiasts, the 5D Mark IV offers features and performance for a variety of subject matter, both with still photography and videography, making it a well-designed, highly versatile DSLR.

As such it becomes one of the most capable and feature-packed full-frame DSLRs around and one that slots perfectly into Canon’s EOS range. It’s a joy to shoot with, but be in no doubt, it no longer delivers a unique proposition. If you’re open to shooting mirrorless and especially if you’re primarily into video, you should consider the competition very carefully.

If you can justify the outlay, then the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV has to be one of the most well-rounded and complete DSLRs we’ve seen. Suited to a range of subjects, from landscapes to sports and wildlife, it’ll perform superbly in any situation.

For an all-around camera, the 5D Mark IV can handle just about anything you throw at it.

Canon has produced another camera that’s likely to be drooled over by both professionals and experienced amateurs. While it’s a shame that the price is so high, you do get a mighty fine camera for your money. Beautiful images, intuitive controls and 4K video-shooting make an excellent 5D camera.

While the industry has placed a lot of emphasis in recent years on smaller, lighter mirrorless cameras, there’s still a lot to be said for shooting with a “traditional” DSLR, and in that respect the 5D Mark IV is certainly one of the best on the market. However, competition from mirrorless is fierce, especially from the disruptive juggernaut that is Sony, so if you have a strong preference for the DSLR format, you should certainly check out some of the many non-mirrored competitors that the 5D Mark IV is up against.

In summary, the 5D Mark IV is an excellent camera for enthusiast, pro and semi-pro photographers. It’s also a very capable video camera, but it’s possibly more suited for those who either only want to shoot video occasionally or those who want to build a rig around it.

the Canon 5D Mk IV is a fantastic workhorse of a camera but in some ways it’s a jack of all trades and master of none. There are cameras out there with better high ISO results, better detail rendition, and with better dynamic range capabilities. But for the most part, the Canon 5D Mk IV takes almost every mirrorless camera on the market and wipes the floor with it. The exceptions are Olympus’s autofocus system, Sony’s general everything when it comes to image quality, and Fujifilm’s color.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is the fourth version of the highly popular 5D series, and brings with it a number of improvements that make it a highly competitive full-frame Digital SLR. For the working professional, the updates, including IPTC meta-data, Wi-Fi (with FTP support), and GPS, will be extremely welcome, and the 5D Mark IV is likely to find itself equally popular, and extremely desirable for many.

Overall, as full-frame all-rounders go the 5D Mark IV is hard to beat. It’s a deft balance between resolution, autofocus ability and control, seeing it stand head and shoulders above its predecessor and, right now, the competition too. Even in the wake of the top-end 1D X II, the 5D still makes enough waves to be in contention for camera of the year.
