Camera Overview
Canon EOS 90D is an upper mid-level enthusiast-class DSLR camera that succeeds the Canon EOS 80D. Like it’s predecessor, EOS 90D is an intermediate level DSLR placed above the Rebel line-up and is aimed at enthusiasts particularly action & wildlife photographers.
What’s New (Canon EOS 90D vs 80D)
Canon 80D has been around since February-2016. That’s around 3½ years before being replaced by the 90D. This should make the 90D a worthy upgrade over its predecessor. Here’s a list of notable improvements against the 80D.
- EOS 90D has a new 32.5 megapixel CMOS sensor (vs 24.2-megapixel sensor on the 80D).
- 90D has Canon’s newer DIGIC 8 processor (vs DIGIC 6 on the 80D).
- It has eye detection AF & spot AF.
- It has a new AF joystick for controlling autofocus.
- EOS 90D can do Focus Bracketing.
- 90D can shoot up to 10 fps continuous (while 80D can shoot at up to 7 fps speed).
- Electronic shutter speed up to 1/16000 sec. (no electronic shutter)
- EOS 90D can shoot 4K video at 25/30 fps without crop (vs no 4K video).
- It can shoot 1080p at 100/120 fps in high-speed mode (vs max 60 fps with no high-speed mode).
- The memory card slot is UHS-II compatible (vs UHS-I compatible slot on 80D).
- 90D has Bluetooth connectivity with no NFC (while 80D has no Bluetooth but has NFC).
- It has an improved battery life of approx. 1300 shots per CIPA standards (vs 80D’s 960 shots).
Things to Remember about the EOS 90D
These are a few things to note when considering the Canon 90D.
- 90D has no 24 fps video recording option at any resolution.
- High-speed 1080p video at 100/120 fps is cropped and loses both autofocus & sound.
- Continuous video recording duration is limited to a max of 30 mins.

Canon EOS 90D Review
The EOS 90D is a DSLR that functions most reliably when used in live view, thanks to its excellent Dual Pixel AF system. Through-the-finder AF is less reliable, by comparison. The camera also offers excellent Raw image quality and usable full-width 4K in a well-built, weather-sealed package with fabulous ergonomics.
Canon EOS 90D review
There are irritations and limitations with any camera, and we can pick out a few with the EOS 90D – but this camera’s capabilities are so impressive and so all-encompassing, that you can’t expect miracles. We’d like a bigger buffer capacity, we’d like twin card slots, we’d like lots of things – but this camera already does so much, and does it so well at an enthusiast camera price point, that it deserves its high rating.
Canon EOS 90D review
..for now, the upgrades across the board still allow the 90D and DSLRs to remain relevant and compelling to those who prefer their form factor and viewfinder to smaller mirrorless cameras with all-electronic composition; it’s especially tempting for 60D or 70D owners who want a bunch of upgrades but without changing the look and feel of their bodies.
Canon EOS 90D review
There’s a lot to recommend the Canon EOS 90D – it’s a full-featured DSLR with the speedy performance to match. The deeper grip makes it comfortable to use for long periods of time, as does its impressive battery life. And it’s been priced to appeal to most enthusiasts. For anyone unwilling to make the move to the mirrorless fray, this snapper is a formidable all-round option.
Canon EOS 90D review: Keeping the DSLR relevant
With both fast bursts and high resolution, the Canon EOS 90D is one of the best crop sensor DSLRs on the market. It offers excellent speed, solid autofocus, and uncropped 4K wrapped in a comfortable body with stellar battery life.
But, the 90D is a DSLR trying to fit into the mirrorless era, and — excluding the exceptional battery life — does little to outpace the faster, lighter, and cheaper Canon EOS M6 Mark II.
Canon EOS 90D Review & Rating
The Canon EOS 90D offers a new sensor with significantly more resolution than its predecessor, but competing mirrorless cameras have an edge in autofocus performance.
Canon EOS 90D Review
For those who continue to prefer the advantages of DSLRs over mirrorless – long battery life, good handling and a wide choice of native lenses – the Canon 90D is a fine choice. It’s a classic all-rounder that is very good in a number of different situations, making it the ideal camera for the enthusiast photographer. Upgraders coming from Canon’s entry-level models, or the 90D’s predecessor, the 80D, will find a lot to like here, especially if you’re not ready to consider making the leap to full-frame. All that said, if you’re not already tied into the Canon DSLR ecosystem, you may want to think about exploring the option of mirrorless instead.
Canon EOS 90D review: A great all-rounder
The EOS 90D’s imperfections are largely the qualities of its competitors. There are lighter, smaller mirrorless cameras out there that match it for image quality, if not resolution. There are other cameras that offer more varied quality video modes, or can shoot log footage. But if you shoot stills, and don’t want to miss one, the 90D is an absolute smasher. Great images, performance and battery life – anyone who says the DSLR is dead hasn’t tried this one.
Canon EOS 90D Review
Overall, the Canon EOS 90D is a great option for those who like DSLRs. Being a good all-rounder it’s good for those who shoot lots of different kinds of subject. It does well at sports and action, as well as being suited to landscape, portraits and pretty much any kind of subject you care to shoot. It’s also reasonably priced for what you get, so it comes highly recommended.
Canon EOS 90D Review
Although we keep hearing about mirrorless camera sales overtaking DSLR sales, there are still many photographers who want a camera with a mirror. The Canon EOS 90D is designed to appeal to those people and it has a comprehensive feature set, an impressive turn of speed and two very capable autofocus systems. It’s also able to produce excellent-quality video and stills.
Canon EOS 90D Review
The Canon EOS 90D lands on the photography scene with an all-new 32mp APS-C CMOS sensor, giving additional choice in the DSLR market. The camera also offers 4K and FullHD video using the full width of the sensor, so could be a great choice for videographers. The Canon EOS 90D delivers both high-resolution images, as well as 10fps continuous shooting, making it a compelling option for those looking for a DSLR. The impressive battery life is also another positive, however, you’ll need to make sure the lenses you use with the camera are up to the job.
Canon EOS 90D review: Is this 32-megapixel DSLR the perfect match?
At a glance Canon’s latest enthusiast DSLR doesn’t appear that different to the outgoing 80D. But with a large bump in resolution and burst shooting it’s an altogether different beast. Add 4K video shooting and this versatile shooter looks like it will reign as the mid-range master for 2019 and beyond. But treat it with some caution: the high resolution high-stakes does mean grain at higher ISO settings, while moving subjects are more challenging too.
